Good morning

We need to start a scheme to replace a clean water pipe in New Road, Whixley from its junction with the High Street to the B6265 Little Ouseburn to Green Hammerton road and then north along the B6265 to Tancred Lodge and Brotes Lane. The current pipes are in need of replacement and have been prone to leaking. We need to complete this essential work now to ensure we can continue to supply high-quality drinking water to local customers.

On Monday 16 November 2020 our capital partners Morrison Utility Services and North East Pipelines will start work to lay the new water pipe. The pipe will be laid using a mixture of open trench excavation and directional drilling techniques which we expect will take until approximately 23 December to complete. Our normal working hours will be Monday to Saturday 8am to 5.30pm. On occasions we may need to work a little later and on a weekend.

To carry out this scheme safely we’ll need to work in the highway and, for safety reasons, will require a road closure and traffic management.

We understand that these works will be inconvenient which is why we’ve liaised closely with North Yorkshire County Council Highways Department regarding every aspect of this essential scheme.

Phases of work and notice of road closure

The start and finish locations of each phase are approximate and may be subject to change due to ground conditions and other unexpected problems that are encountered as the scheme progresses. Approximate start and completion dates for each section of road will be:

First phase and notice of road closure of New Road

The first phase of the scheme will start on Monday 16 November on New Road and will take until approximately 8 December to complete.

To ensure the safety of road users and the site team it will be necessary to close this road to through traffic as we work in short sections of the highway. The closure will be in place 24 hours a day. Access will remain open for residents either side of the road closure.

A signed diversion route will be in place via Rudgate in the village of Whixley north to the B6265 Little Ouseburn to Green Hammerton road and then south along this road to the east side of New Road.

As we’ll need to make connections to the existing water supply pipe network at the junction of New Road and High Street, Station Road and Rudgate in Whixley we’ll need to have temporary three-way traffic lights in operation for approximately 2 weeks.

These lights may need to be in operation again towards the end of our scheme if we are unable to abandon the old water pipe when we make the initial connection with the new pipe.

Second phase

The second phase of the scheme will commence on approximately 3 December and will take until the end of the scheme to complete. This part of the scheme will be on the B6265 Little Ouseburn to Green Hammerton road between New Road and Tancred Lodge and Brotes Lane.

During this phase, to ensure the safety of the site team and road users, it will be necessary to have a mixture of two-way and three-way traffic lights in operation 24 hours a day as we work in short sections of the highway. These will move as our work progresses.

If we need to affect anyone’s water supply we’ll notify them of the dates and times in advance if they will be affected.

We’re writing to customers in the area to notify them of this work and also that we won’t need access into anyone’s premises. We’re also advising customers to always be aware of bogus callers and before letting anyone in please make sure they ask to see their identification.

Refuse collections will continue as normal. If anyone’s property is within the road closure or our working area they can notify the site team if they need assistance to move their bin to the end of the working area and they will ensure it gets emptied.

We’ve apologised for any inconvenience that may be caused and thanked everyone in advance for their patience.

Please be assured we’ll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum and complete the work as quickly as possible.
