The first walking football sessions in the village are expected to kick-off this month with no fewer than 24 players now signed by the nascent Whixley Walking Football Club before the end of the January transfer window.
Co-Managers Nick Gibsone and Tim Procter are reported to be “over the moon” at the quality of players that have signed up for the “Cherry Kickers” although keen to stress that they are “taking it one match and one cliché at a time”.
The Whixley squad is a perfect blend of experience and even greater experience with the youngest signing a mere lad of 44 and the oldest (no names) a sprightly 74.
New players are always welcome, however, and anyone over 40 who might be interested in adding to the squad for the season ahead should email Nick at nick.gibsone@btinternet.com or Tim at timprocter@timprocter.plus.com
We are extremely grateful to Queen Ethelburga’s school for their generosity in marking out the village pitch and providing us with line marking equipment for future use, plus a supply of marking paint and a full set of corner flags. Our thanks to them and specifically to Ben Grigor, QE’s Grounds Manager, and his colleagues who freely gave up their time to get the pitch at Whixley Community Stadium (no harm in thinking big!) looking so good in preparation for the first match.
We are grateful too for the support given by the Village Hall Committee and members of the Parish Council in getting this particular ball rolling (sorry, but that was an open goal I just couldn’t miss).
It might only be a village walking football club but it’s already clear that we really do have the best supporters in the land.
