The Parish Council have been pushing for Speed Cameras in our village, and this is the reply from our local MP.

Thank you for your letter regarding traffic speeds through Whixley and across North Yorkshire, and for sharing the collective concerns raised by Whixley Parish Council and many others who have joined the “Average and Fixed Speed Cameras – North Yorkshire” campaign.
I fully appreciate how deeply this issue affects communities, speeding in rural towns and villages not only undermines road safety but also seriously impacts residents’ quality of life. It is clear from your letter that Whixley Parish Council has worked diligently and in good faith over many years to secure improvements, investing in vehicle-activated signage, participating in Speed Watch initiatives, and consistently requesting traffic calming measures.
You rightly highlight that North Yorkshire remains an outlier in not using fixed speed cameras. A blend of average and fixed speed cameras, particularly in known hotspot areas, would send a strong message and form an effective deterrent. While no solution can be universal, targeted and visible enforcement could reduce dangerous driving, free up mobile resources, and offer much-needed reassurance to communities like yours.
As your Member of Parliament, I will also raise this matter with the relevant department at North Yorkshire County Council. It is clear from the number of councils supporting this campaign that this is not an isolated issue, and a coordinated cross-county approach is needed to bring North Yorkshire in line with good practice elsewhere.
