The Harvest Supper and Auction, organized in support of The Church of the Ascension, Whixley, took place as usual in the Village Hall on the first Friday of October. This event is always a wonderful opportunity for old friends and newcomers to come together, and this year was no exception.

Revd. Sarah Feaster welcomed everyone and paid tribute to Jonty Lightowler, our beloved auctioneer and friend, who passed away this Spring. After grace, we enjoyed our traditional meal of pork casserole followed by apple pie.

Once the delicious meal was cleared away, the eagerly awaited auction began. We had a fantastic array of generously donated home-produced goods: jams, chutneys, cakes, pies, biscuits, and this year, some delightful flavored oils and vinegars, along with pork joints. Johnsons Nurseries contributed plants, and there were cushions, decorative items, and more, all donated by our wonderful diners.

The room was filled with well-fed, cheerful attendees eagerly awaiting the auction. David Lindley from High Street, having been promoted from washing-up duties, took on the role of our new auctioneer. His quick wit and keen eye ensured that bidding was fast, furious, and remarkably generous. Many left with armfuls of jams, biscuits, and prized pork chops worthy of becoming family heirlooms.

The PCC extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making the evening a success: those who cooked, set up the hall, served the meal, washed up afterwards, and of course, everyone who attended, donated items, and bid with such enthusiasm.

The evening was voted a great night out, raising an impressive £2,500 for church funds. Thank you all very much indeed!
