What a magnificent turnout for the village bonfire on Saturday night. Hundreds of people from the village and surrounding area flocked to Whixley Village Hall for a night to remember.
On Saturday morning a small army of volunteers, pictured here, built the fire under the expert guidance of Rick Illingworth. Another army of volunteers prepared to provide food and drink to those who attended led by Dee Wright and Clare Beckett. The array of cakes and other goodies prepared and donated by many members of the village provide a mouth-watering display. Keith Tolan and Ian McNeill prepared to handle the finance for the evening, including being able to take contactless payments. Mike Turner made sure that there were enough soft drinks beer and wine to go round. A massive thank you to all the friends of the village hall who freely donated their time and expertise.
Despite all these preparations none of us anticipated the size of the crowd and the demand for food and drink, but the team responded magnificently.
The fire itself was huge, thanks to the generous donations from Portakabin and Johnsons of Whixley, and was closely monitored by Rick and his team while the crowds were kept at a safe distance. The firework display prompted lots of OOOHs and AAHHs from the crowd which included hundreds of children.
The clean-up team finished the hall later that night, and more volunteers arrived on Sunday morning to clear the fire site.
A huge thank you to all who were involved in making this evening a great success.
