Our walking football team, Whixley Wanderers, maintained their 100% win record this month with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wetherby Town at Whixley Playing Field on the 26th July.
Three superb goals from midfield dynamo Richard Megson including a last-minute clincher finally put paid to the challenge of our bigger rivals from Wetherby but the match was evenly contested and the result was on a knife-edge right up until the final whistle.
Once again, we are grateful for the support we receive within the community, not just from the Parish Council and Village Hall Committee who have both been instrumental in making our team a reality but also to those in the community who have supported us by turning up at games. It makes an incredible difference and the players really appreciate it.
Special mention too to our Coach, former Harrogate Town player David Braithwaite, our regular and hugely respected referee John Fisher and last but by no means least our local shirt sponsor WWW.DrEmma.UK. We are lucky to have them.
Our progress in just a few short months from total non-existence to where we are now is frankly astonishing. There can be no greater proof of that than that we have recently been invited by the North Riding Football Association to join the inaugural North Riding Walking Football League where, if accepted, we will face big guns such as Whitby, Scarborough, Stockton, Redcar and Middlesborough.
